About This Map
This situation tracker monitors 30+ entries worldwide, categorized by intensity level and type. Data is compiled from official government and defense sources, verified open-source intelligence, and authoritative research organizations.
Entries are organized by intensity and further broken down by type:
- Active Conflicts - sustained operations involving organized parties and significant impact figures
- Major Tension Zones - elevated postures, diplomatic standoffs, or credible escalation potential
- Territorial Disputes - 6 tracked
- Counterterrorism - 2 tracked
- Civil & Internal Conflicts - 4 tracked
- Geopolitical & Diplomatic - 1 tracked
- Incidents & Events - 5 tracked
Regional coverage. Every U.S. combatant-command area of responsibility is represented: Middle East (CENTCOM), Indo-Pacific (USPACOM), Europe (EUCOM), Africa (AFRICOM), and the Americas (NORTHCOM, SOUTHCOM). Tension zones outside active operational areas are also tracked so escalation pathways are visible before they cross into sustained operations.
Verification approach. Nuclear-adjacent assessments are made separately for each situation based on the involvement of nuclear-armed states, signaling history, and proximity to strategic infrastructure. The classification framework follows the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) methodology, cross-referenced with the Council on Foreign Relations Global Conflict Tracker and Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP). Wire services, official government releases, and verified open-source channels provide the primary data feed; details and timing are confirmed before publication.
Major Tension Zones
Regions with elevated postures, diplomatic standoffs, or escalation potential that have not reached sustained conflict.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many active conflicts are there in the world right now?
As of June 2026, there are approximately 14 major active conflicts including the Iran-Israel exchange (Operation Epic Fury), Russia-Ukraine conflict, Israel-Gaza conflict, Sudan civil conflict, Myanmar civil conflict, Yemen conflict, and continued violence in Syria. Lower-intensity conflicts and tension zones with escalation potential are also tracked.
What is the difference between an active conflict and a tension zone?
Active conflicts involve sustained operations between organized parties with significant impact figures over a measurable period. Tension zones cover areas with elevated postures, diplomatic standoffs, force buildups, or credible escalation potential that have not yet reached sustained operations. The distinction matters because tension zones are the most useful early-warning category: most active conflicts begin as tension zones first.
Which situation has the highest risk of nuclear escalation?
The Iran-Israel exchange (Operation Epic Fury, February-March 2026) involved direct strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iranian ballistic-system salvos at Israel, representing the most active nuclear-adjacent situation. The Russia-Ukraine conflict carries sustained escalation potential as Russia is a nuclear-armed state and has signaled nuclear posture during operations. The Taiwan Strait tensions also carry nuclear-adjacent exposure, given China's status as a nuclear-armed state.
How is nuclear risk calculated for each situation?
Nuclear-risk badges reflect three independent factors evaluated for each situation: (1) direct involvement of a nuclear-armed state as a party to the situation, (2) explicit nuclear signaling such as doctrine statements, exercises, or rhetoric from leadership, and (3) proximity to nuclear infrastructure such as warhead storage, delivery systems, or production sites. A situation must show at least one factor to be flagged; "high" nuclear risk indicates two or more factors plus an active escalation trajectory.
Why is a particular situation not on this map?
The tracker focuses on situations that meet a verifiability threshold from multiple authoritative sources. Brief incidents, unconfirmed reports, or single-source claims are not added until they are independently corroborated. Internal protests, individual criminal events, and low-intensity civil disputes are also out of scope unless they cross into sustained organized operations. If a major situation appears missing, it may be classified under a different category (cyber, maritime, terrorism) rather than active conflict.
How often is this situation tracker updated?
This tracker is reviewed on a regular cadence, or more frequently when major developments occur. Data is compiled from official sources including the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), Council on Foreign Relations Global Conflict Tracker, and Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP). Recent alerts are pulled from our editorial team daily; situation classifications are reviewed weekly.
Can I embed this map or use the data elsewhere?
The interactive map is available as an embed for educational and informational use; the full-screen version at /global-assets-map provides standalone access. Underlying classification data follows the ACLED and UCDP methodologies and should be attributed to those upstream sources. For media inquiries, licensing requests, or syndication of our editorial assessments, use the contact link in the footer.
Data Sources & Methodology
Situation data is compiled from authoritative sources:
- Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED)
- Council on Foreign Relations Global Conflict Tracker
- Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP)
- United Nations OCHA
- U.S. Department of Defense press releases
- Verified open-source intelligence (OSINT) channels
Verification Approach
Three layers govern what reaches this tracker. First, every entry is verified against at least two upstream authorities (ACLED, UCDP, CFR, or government bulletins). Second, our editorial team cross-checks timing, parties involved, and impact figures against wire services and official statements before publication. Third, classification (active conflict, tension zone, monitored category) is reviewed weekly and adjusted as evidence shifts; reclassification decisions are logged in our internal change history.
ACLED contributes event-level granularity (date, location, actors, impact figures). UCDP contributes longer-running conflict definitions and historical baselines. CFR provides regional analysis and escalation context. These three feeds are reconciled on classification disagreements through editorial review rather than choosing one source as canonical.
