Africa Command Mission Overview
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) works with partner nations to counter transnational threats, strengthen security forces, and respond to crises across an area of responsibility covering 53 African states and approximately 11.2 million square miles of land. The continent contains vast natural resources, critical minerals supplies, and energy infrastructure, with maritime trade routes traversing nearly 19,000 miles of African coastline. Headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, the command coordinates with approximately 38 partner-nation Security Cooperation Offices.
AFRICOM is a full-spectrum geographic combatant command coordinating operations, exercises, and security cooperation across the African continent, its island nations, and surrounding waters. Major 2026 multinational exercises include Justified Accord, an East Africa exercise centered in Djibouti, Kenya, and Tanzania, and Flintlock, which brought together service members from more than 30 partner nations across Côte d'Ivoire and Libya. Counter-terrorism support, maritime-security capacity building, and partner-nation interoperability are ongoing lines of effort.
