NATO Baltic Air Policing Jet Shoots Down Foreign Drone Over Eastern Latvia

LATVIA — On the morning of August 14, a NATO fighter jet operating under the Baltic Air Policing mission from a base in Lithuania intercepted and destroyed a foreign unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Latvian airspace over Balvi Municipality.

The Latvian National Armed Forces stated an airspace threat shortly after 4:00 a.m. local time in the municipalities of Augšdaugava, Preiļi, Rēzekne, Balvi, and Alūksne.

Residents were directed to seek indoor shelter following the two-wall principle and to avoid approaching any low-flying or suspicious objects. NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters were scrambled in response.

The threat ended at 4:50 a.m. local time after the jet successfully engaged the unmanned aerial vehicle. According to the Latvian Defense Ministry, the unmanned aerial vehicle entered Latvia as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare.

The Lithuanian Defense Ministry stated that a NATO fighter jet stationed in Lithuania conducted the engagement. Additional air defense units were deployed to Latvia’s eastern borders.
