U.S. Pacific Command Mission Overview
U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) protects and defends U.S. territory, people, and interests across an area of responsibility encompassing approximately 52 percent of the earth's surface and 38 nations, including five mutual-defense-treaty allies. The region contains two of the world's three largest economies, the most populous nation, the largest democracy, major semiconductor manufacturing capacity, critical-minerals and rare-earth production, and the shipping lanes of the South China Sea and Western Pacific. Headquartered at Camp H.M. Smith near Honolulu, Hawaii, the command operates through five component commands supporting approximately 344,000 assigned military and civilian personnel.
USPACOM persistently integrates and employs credible, all-domain combat power to deter aggression, prevent and respond to crisis, and, if necessary, conduct decisive joint and combined operations to prevail in conflict. The 2022 National Defense Strategy identifies China as the Department of Defense's pacing challenge. Priority challenges include integrated information operations, posture for global conflict, accelerating alliances and partnerships through Pacific geography, and assuring effective command and control across the priority theater.
- Regional security cooperation and deterrence.
- Joint readiness across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains.
- Contingency planning and crisis response.
