AFRICOM Conducts Airstrike Targeting al-Shabaab Near Jamaame

SOMALIA — U.S. Africa Command announced on August 3 that it conducted an airstrike targeting al-Shabaab on July 30 in the vicinity of Jamaame, approximately 36 miles (58 km) northeast of Kismayo, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

AFRICOM stated that it, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues action to degrade al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten U.S. forces and U.S. citizens abroad. Specific details about units and assets were withheld for operations security.

No casualty figures, target characterization beyond the group name, or battle-damage assessment appeared in the release.

U.S. Africa Command’s public 2026 strikes record lists eight declared airstrikes in Somalia during July, all targeting al-Shabaab. Six of those eight occurred in the Kismayo approaches or Lower Juba, including a prior strike on July 4 in the vicinity of Jamame approximately 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Kismayo.

On July 29 the Somali Ministry of Defense announced a separate precision airstrike it said targeted a meeting of al-Shabaab senior leaders in Aadan Yabaal district of Middle Shabelle region, stating the strike neutralized 11 senior leaders and wounded four others. That announcement made no reference to operations in Lower Juba or Jamaame.

On July 29 the Somali Ministry of Defense announced a separate precision airstrike it said targeted a meeting of al-Shabaab senior leaders in Aadan Yabaal district of Middle Shabelle region, stating the strike neutralized 11 senior leaders and wounded four others. That announcement made no reference to operations in Lower Juba or Jamaame.

Campaign Context in Lower Juba

AFRICOM has released multiple airstrike announcements targeting al-Shabaab in the Kismayo and Jamaame area across 2026. The command’s own 2026 strikes record lists the following July operations in or near that cluster:

• July 30: vicinity of Jamaame, 36 miles (58 km) northeast of Kismayo

• July 15: vicinity of Welmaro, 62 miles (100 km) north of Kismayo

• July 13: vicinity of Qumbi, 55 miles (88 km) northwest of Kismayo

• July 8: vicinity of Baqdaad, 56 miles (90 km) northwest of Kismayo

• July 5: vicinity of Juba, 47 miles (75 km) northwest of Kismayo

• July 4: vicinity of Jamame, 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Kismayo

Two additional July strikes occurred farther afield, one near Sablaale southwest of Mogadishu and one near Farsooley west of Mogadishu. All eight July strikes targeted al-Shabaab. The year-to-date total stands at 77 declared strikes according to the same AFRICOM record.

Al-Shabaab remains designated by the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Terrorist Organization since 2008.

No official update to that designation status has been issued in connection with the July 30 strike. No incident matching the Jamaame location inside a 72-hour window centered on July 30 has been located in official AFRICOM releases.

On July 29 the Somali Ministry of Defense separately announced its own airstrike against al-Shabaab leaders in Middle Shabelle, a different region, with no reference to Lower Juba.

• Somali Ministry of Defence, July 29: The Minister of Defense announced during a press conference in Galkayo that a precision airstrike targeted a meeting of al-Shabaab senior leaders in Aadan Yabaal district of the Middle Shabelle region. The meeting was chaired by Yusuf Isse Kaba-kudukade, the group’s regional leader for Middle Shabelle. The strike neutralized 11 al-Shabaab senior leaders and wounded four others, including Kaba-kudukade.
