AFRICOM Strikes al-Shabaab Near Quumbi Northwest of Kismayo

HORN OF AFRICA — U.S. Africa Command struck al-Shabaab near Quumbi, Somalia, about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Kismayo on Sept. 8, according to a Sept. 11 release from U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Public Affairs. AFRICOM said the strike was carried out in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

The command withheld units, aircraft, weapons, battle-damage results, and casualty figures, citing operations security.

On Sept. 8 it also announced a Sept. 5 strike near Quumbi, about 47 miles (75 km) north-northwest of Kismayo, and a Sept. 4 strike about 109 miles (175 km) west of Mogadishu.

Each notice uses the same purpose line: action with the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces to reduce al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten U.S. forces and U.S. citizens abroad.

No command aim point and no Somali gazetteer pin for Quumbi on those bearings is on the public record as of Sept. 11.
