Spanish F-18 Downs Drone in Romanian Airspace Under NATO Enhanced Air Defense

GALAȚI COUNTY, ROMANIA — Two Spanish F-18 fighter aircraft assigned to NATO’s enhanced Air Defense mission at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base intercepted and destroyed a drone that entered Romanian national airspace from the direction of Moldova in the early hours of August 16.

Romanian Ministry of National Defense surveillance systems detected the aerial target at 04:44 local time approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Galați.

An F-18 of the Spanish Air and Space Force, already airborne on a monitoring mission under the Air Policing Combat Service, established radar contact and received engagement authorization.

The drone was shot down at 05:01 over an unpopulated area between the localities of Băleni and Cudalbi in Galați County. The air alert for Galați County ended at 05:20. No casualties or infrastructure damage were reported.

Fighter Jets Locked Onto Drone 15 Minutes After Entry Into Romanian Airspace

Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that the drone was locked on the fighters’ radars approximately 15 minutes after entry, with engagement at 05:01 (17 minutes after detection).

He described the track as having proceeded along the Chilia branch of the Danube on Ukrainian territory, then through the Republic of Moldova, before crossing into Romania near the tri-border area.

Military helicopters continued to search the Băleni-Cudalbi sector later on August 16 for the precise impact point and additional debris.

The Spanish aircraft form part of a contingent of seven F-18s, three NH-90 counter-drone helicopters, one A400M aerial refueling aircraft and approximately 200 personnel that arrived at Mihail Kogălniceanu at the beginning of August.

The operation was coordinated through NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre at Torrejón, Spain. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that the two Spanish F-18s had been scrambled preventively as a precaution before receiving authorization to engage.

Spanish Ministry of Defense stated that pilots of Ala 12 conducted the engagement.

NATO Air Command stated the Spanish detachment operates under the enhanced Air Defense framework that replaced traditional Air Policing, enabling a layered response across domains.

U.S. Army Col. Martin O’Donnell, spokesperson for NATO’s military headquarters, stated on August 16 that additional details remained under investigation but that the drone “appears to be Russian.”

Romanian authorities have not issued a final origin determination pending examination of recovered debris. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu noted that this was the third unmanned vehicle to enter Romanian airspace illegally and be shot down in the preceding three weeks.
