Finnish Defense Forces Enhance Surveillance and Response Capabilities After Reports of Drones Potentially Straying Into Finland
FINLAND — The Finnish Defense Forces immediately enhanced their own surveillance and response capabilities after receiving information early in the morning on Friday, May 15, about drones possibly straying into Finland.
The Defense Forces have responded to the situation and increased their preparedness. The measures included, among other things, increasing the number of air surveillance personnel, increasing the efficiency of fighter jets by adjusting the duty location, time and take-off readiness of armed fighter jets on operational alert, and increasing the efficiency of the use of Army helicopters and Navy vessels.
Finland Introduces Temporary Aviation Restriction
The country’s Border Guard has also increased its preparedness. The expected target area for aircraft heading to Finland is the area between Helsinki and Porvoo, according to the ministry.
Finland is currently not facing a direct military threat. The Finnish military introduced a temporary aviation restriction area as of 4:00 on 15 May. The purpose of the temporary aviation restriction areas (R-area) is to prevent the movement of bystanders in the restricted areas and thus ensure better conditions for the safe interception of stray drones. The restrictions ensure the safety of bystanders.
Helsinki-Vantaa air traffic and sea traffic in the Gulf of Finland were rerouted starting at 4:00 in the morning. The rescue authority issued a danger bulletin for the Uusimaa region at 3:49.
Ukraine has carried out extensive drone attacks on Russian territory and individual drones have also strayed into Finnish airspace and territory. There is no immediate end to the attacks on Russia in sight.
According to the Finnish Defense Forces bulletin, authorities immediately stepped up air surveillance personnel numbers, adjusted fighter jet alert status for quicker armed response, and boosted operational efficiency of Army helicopters and Navy vessels. The Border Guard simultaneously raised its preparedness level. These actions target the expected area between Helsinki and Porvoo in southern Finland.
Temporary Aviation and Maritime Restrictions
