French Navy Boards Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker Grinch in Mediterranean for Sanctions Violation

MEDITERRANEAN SEA - On January 22, the French Navy boarded the oil tanker Grinch, suspected of belonging to Russia's shadow fleet and flying a false Comoros flag to evade international sanctions. The operation occurred off the coast of Almería, Spain, with allied support including United Kingdom intelligence.

A judicial investigation commenced, and the vessel was diverted to Brest, France, for inspection. This action enforces measures against fleets funding Russia's military efforts in Ukraine.

Operational Details

The French Navy deployed an NH90 helicopter from the frigate Provence to board the Grinch during the high-seas operation. Imagery shows the helicopter approaching the tanker.

The vessel departed Novorossiysk, Russia, on January 2, 2026, bound for China via the Suez Canal. Suspicions included false flagging and lack of valid insurance.

Crew information indicates a Chinese captain, though details remain limited. The boarding proceeded without incident, securing the ship for diversion. This follows United States interdictions in the Caribbean earlier in January 2026.

The shadow fleet involves aging tankers under opaque ownership to transport sanctioned Russian oil. Estimates place the fleet at around 1,400 vessels, generating billions in revenue annually.
