Finland Sets Temporary Airspace Restriction Off Kotka-Hamina After Suspected Drone Violation
EASTERN FINLAND — An unmanned drone is suspected of violating Finnish airspace in eastern Finland. At the request of the Air Force, area air traffic control established a temporary airspace restriction zone for the sea area off the coast of Kotka-Hamina. The restriction was lifted on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m.
The Defense Forces have maintained heightened readiness since late March, following Ukrainian operations against Russian targets in the St. Petersburg region and in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland.

Anti-Drone Defense and Public Safety
The Defense Forces were prepared to intercept the drone that fell near Kouvola, but chose not to engage in order to prevent collateral damage.
Decisions to shoot down a drone are based on an assessment of whether the situation presents an immediate and serious threat to national safety.
During a drone incursion, the potential danger posed by the drone must be weighed against the risks to the local population. From a safety standpoint, it is clear that missile or artillery fire is not employed over populated areas.
The Defense Forces continue to monitor the airspace closely and maintain readiness. At present, Finland faces no direct military threat.
