Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict: Bilateral Defense Officials Scheduled to Meet Amid Renewed Hostilities

SOUTHEAST ASIA - Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to convene a meeting of the General Border Committee on December 24 in Thailand's Chanthaburi province to discuss ceasefire implementation and verification measures. This follows a special ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Kuala Lumpur on December 22. The ASEAN gathering urged both parties to exercise maximum restraint and cease hostilities immediately while welcoming the planned bilateral dialogue as a step toward de-escalation. Hostilities resumed on December 8 amid mutual accusations of violations of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord signed on October 26. Exchanges have involved artillery, small arms fire, airstrikes, and rocket launches across multiple border provinces, including Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey in Cambodia, alongside corresponding areas in Thailand. Cambodia closed border crossings on December 13 until further notice. Thailand has stated that ceasefire decisions depend on ground assessments by security authorities. Casualty reports indicate at least 80 combined deaths since the resumption, with displacement affecting hundreds of thousands on both sides and estimates exceeding half a million in Cambodia. Evacuations and temporary shelters support affected civilians. The December 22 ASEAN meeting welcomed the planned December 24 dialogue as progress toward de-escalation. The location in Chanthaburi province was proposed by Thailand. The United States has supported ASEAN efforts while maintaining calls for compliance with existing commitments.
