Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict Escalates With Artillery Exchanges and Civilian Displacement

SOUTHEAST ASIA - Border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated on December 14 with continued artillery exchanges and reports of significant civilian displacement.

The conflict has resulted in dozens of casualties and affected hundreds of thousands of residents on both sides of the border.

The clashes follow mutual accusations of violations of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord signed on October 26. Both nations have deployed military forces along the disputed border regions, with exchanges involving artillery, small arms fire, and airstrikes.

Cambodia closed border crossings on December 13 until further notice, disrupting trade and humanitarian access. Thailand has stated that ceasefire decisions depend on ground assessments by security authorities.

Regional organizations including ASEAN have called for restraint and diplomatic resolution.

The United States has supported ASEAN mediation efforts while maintaining calls for compliance with existing commitments.
