BEMOWO PISKIE TRAINING AREA, Poland — Deputy Chief of Defence Lt. Gen. Dragoş‑Dumitru Iacob of the Romanian Armed Forces visited the NATO Forward Land Forces (FLF) Battle Group–Poland at Bemowo Piskie Training Area (BPTA) on July 23, 2026 to review training, infrastructure, and multinational interoperability.

Iacob received briefings from Polish Land Forces Training Center officials on BPTA’s live‑fire, infantry and small‑arms ranges (including grenade and close‑quarters facilities), mechanized and armored training areas for infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, air‑defense coverage and capabilities, target ranges and firing distances, engineering ranges, and the overall layout of training sectors.

Polish hosts presented a map of the training areas and outlined the organization of the 15th Mechanized Brigade, how the brigade’s equipment and traditions are integrated into operations, and plans for an upcoming equipment upgrade.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Steven Saxion, commander of the 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, and of the NATO FLF Battle Group–Poland, briefed Iacob on the battle group’s composition and multinational rotations, which include Romanian, Croatian, British and U.S. troops. He also cited recent anti-UAS exercises his battalion conducted in Hohenfels, Germany.

The commander of Romania’s 348th Air Defence Battalion reviewed a near‑term training calendar and described his unit’s role and capabilities.

Iacob toured a static display of armored vehicles and spoke with troops from Romania, Poland, the U.S., Croatia, and Britain. He consulted with Polish Vice Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Karol Dymanowski and offered words of support to junior‑enlisted Soldiers.

“Meeting with both the Romanian and Polish Vice Chiefs of Defense today was a terrific opportunity to highlight the Battle Group's capabilities, especially our Romanian Air Defense unit, and our close partnership,” said Saxion. “We truly are 'stronger together.’”

Leaders from the participating nations held a working lunch to reinforce interoperability goals and discuss future cooperation. The visit ended with an exchange of gifts and the presentation of challenge coins, emphasizing camaraderie and Romania’s commitment to collective defense on NATO’s eastern flank.

CARACAS, VENEZUELA - Following two earthquakes off the northern coast of Venezuela on June 24 the United States mobilized a humanitarian response at the request of the Venezuelan government. To support U.S. Southern Command’s rapid deployment of personnel and specialized equipment into the disaster zone, Littoral Combat Force 24 transitioned from scheduled regional security missions to support the U.S. government’s disaster response operation.

SIMÓN BOLÍVAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Venezuela - After weeks of supporting a continuous, 24-hour airlift of global aid, the U.S. Air Force’s 621st Contingency Response Wing has concluded its disaster relief deployment in Venezuela. Operating at the direction of U.S. Southern Command to support a U.S. State Department-led mission, the "Devil Raiders" facilitated the transfer of nearly 3 million pounds of life-saving cargo intended for earthquake survivors.

When the earthquakes struck on June 24, critical supply lines were severely disrupted. In response, the 621st CRW deployed a Contingency Response Element of 110 Airmen with specialized airfield management expertise. This team quickly integrated with local aviation authorities to manage tower and ground operations, ensuring that vital supplies, heavy equipment, and relief personnel safely reached the front lines of the disaster zone as quickly as possible.

This direct logistical throughput enabled U.S. certified nongovernmental organizations to conduct hand-to-hand delivery to an estimated 930,000 impacted residents.

The relief effort was a truly global response. CRE aerial porters offloaded a steady stream of international aircraft, pushing pallets of aid from Germany, Mexico, Japan, Uruguay, and many other nations from across the globe - rapidly transferring the cargo to local transport networks for distribution.

The operational impact of the relief mission drew a July 6 visit from U.S. Southern Command Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan. Visiting the CRE's Joint Operations Center, Donovan met face-to-face with the contingency response Airmen to survey the ongoing disaster response.

During the walkthrough, Donovan highlighted the professionalism and operational effectiveness of the unit. He also recognized the coordinated command structure that enabled the rapid logistical throughput, specifically noting the leadership of Col. Joseph Michaels, Joint Task Force-Port Opening commander, and Lt. Col. Jessica Foster, CRE commander.

“I'm very proud of the effort of our Air Force element at Simón Bolívar Airport, the contingency response element, who were literally on the ground within the first 24 hours. They were able to get the airfield open and operate at max capacity right away, and that's important when you bring in relief supplies,” Donovan said.

Executing a disaster response of this scale required mobilizing the Air Force’s Total Force network. While the mission was led by the 321st CRS, the deployment integrated active-duty augmentees from the 521st and 621st squadrons at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. Crucial logistical and airfield capabilities were also seamlessly integrated from the Air National Guard, incorporating the California Air National Guard’s 146th Contingency Response Flight in Oxnard, California, and the Puerto Rico Air National Guard’s 156th Contingency Response Group.

* Until 330 AM EDT.

* At 1159 PM EDT, emergency management reported flooding from heavy rain in earlier thunderstorms. Between 5 and 7 inches of rain fell. Flash flooding is already occurring.

HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Buckhannon, Tallmansville, Overhill, French Creek, Ellamore and Horner.

This includes Route 33 between mile markers 2 and 5...and between mile markers 15 and 17.

At 1157 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Lowesville, or 7 miles northeast of Clifford, moving east at 45 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

IMPACT...For those in the direct path of a tornado touchdown, flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Damage to roofs, siding, and windows may occur. Mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed. Tree damage is likely.

This dangerous storm will be near... Shipman around 1200 AM EDT.

Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include Roseland, Arrington, Lovingston, and Piney River.

* At 1042 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 3 and 5 inches of rain have fallen. Flooding impacts will continue, but no additional rainfall is expected. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
