162nd Wing:
"MORRIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ariz. โ Before aircraft take to the skies, Airmen assigned to Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) work behind the scenes to ensure essential support equipment is ready when needed. At the 162nd Wing, Arizona Air National Guard, AGE personnel maintain equipment that supports aircraft maintenance and flight operations.
From generators that provide electrical power to equipment supplying cooling and hydraulic pressure, AGE Airmen play an important role in sustaining aircraft readiness. Their work allows maintenance personnel to perform essential tasks while aircraft remain on the ground.
Although their contributions often take place away from the spotlight, the AGE mission directly supports the wingโs operational capabilities.
โAGE might be seen as a behind the scenes operation, but it plays a critical role in every part of jet maintenance. If we donโt perform, other shops canโt either,โ said U.S. Air National Guard Master Sgt. Joseph Espinosa, an AGE swing shift supervisor with 25 years of experience in the career field.
To keep equipment operational, AGE technicians conduct inspections, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, replace faulty components and perform preventive maintenance. Their responsibilities include servicing hydraulic systems, repairing damaged equipment and testing engine performance to ensure ground support assets remain ready for use.
The mission requires technical expertise, attention to detail and coordination among maintenance personnel. When aircraft require ground support, AGE Airmen help provide the equipment necessary for maintenance operations to continue.
Beyond daily repairs, AGE personnel contribute to long-term mission readiness through equipment inspections, technical training and mentorship. Experienced technicians help develop the skills of newer Airmen, strengthening the unitโs ability to respond to maintenance requirements.
Whether working inside the maintenance shop or supporting operations on the flight line, AGE Airmen provide an essential service to the 162nd Wing.
While their work may not always be visible during aircraft operations, the equipment they maintain helps ensure other maintenance teams can perform their duties and keep the wingโs flying mission moving forward."
