U.S. Air Force Prepares for Minuteman III ICBM Test Launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base

WEST COAST - An operational test launch of an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile is set for a designated window from Vandenberg Space Force Base. This event, managed by Space Launch Delta 30, focuses on validating the weapon system’s effectiveness, readiness, and accuracy. The test forms part of routine evaluations scheduled years ahead, according to the U.S. Space Force.

Launch Schedule and Objectives

The test involves an unarmed Minuteman III ICBM departing from Vandenberg Space Force Base during the designated period. This procedure falls under the Air Force Global Strike Command’s oversight.

Minuteman III System Specifications

The LGM-30G Minuteman III serves as a silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of traveling over 6,000 miles at speeds exceeding Mach 23. It supports up to three warheads via multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles, though configurations adhere to a single warhead under arms control agreements. Guidance relies on inertial navigation, achieving precision within several hundred feet, enabled by solid-fuel rockets.

The missile measures 59.9 feet in length with a diameter of 5.5 feet and a launch weight of 79,432 pounds. Its three-stage propulsion system delivers thrust from 202,600 pounds in the first stage down to 17,000 pounds in the third. Operational since the 1970s, the fleet undergoes continuous upgrades to address component aging.

Assessment: The specifications enable rapid response within the nuclear triad framework, complementing submarine and bomber elements. Upgrades extend viability against threats from hypersonic developments by adversaries. Transition planning to newer systems accounts for these parameters to avoid capability gaps.

Evolution and Deployment History

Introduced in 1970, the Minuteman III built upon predecessors developed in the late 1950s, incorporating solid-propellant advancements for enhanced reliability. The current inventory comprises 400 missiles stationed at Malmstrom, Minot, and F.E. Warren Air Force Bases, supported by 450 launch facilities. Life extension initiatives have replaced guidance packages and remanufactured rocket motors, projecting service through the 2030s.

Over 300 test launches have occurred, with recent examples including a November 2025 event from Vandenberg involving multiple reentry vehicles traveling 4,200 miles to Kwajalein Atoll. Earlier tests in June 2025 and February 2025 further affirmed the system’s dependability.

Assessment: The historical progression from liquid to solid fuels improved launch readiness, a critical factor in deterrence strategy. Test frequency provides data for refinements, ensuring alignment with evolving security needs. As the sole land-based ICBM under treaties, its maintenance supports allied assurances.
