Cuban Border Guard Troops Engage U.S.-Registered Speedboat in Territorial Waters, Killing Four and Injuring Six

CARIBBEAN - On the morning of February 25, a speedboat registered in Florida, with registration number FL7726SH entered Cuban territorial waters and approached within one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel in Cayo Falcones, Corralillo municipality, Villa Clara province.

When a surface unit of the Border Guard Troops of the Ministry of the Interior carrying five service members approached the vessel for identification, the crew opened fire on the Cuban personnel, injuring the commander of the Cuban vessel, according to the Cuban Embassy.

In the exchange that followed, the Embassy said that four individuals on the U.S. registered vessel were killed and six were injured. Cuban authorities evacuated the injured and provided medical assistance.

The U.S. registered speedboat (Florida registration FL7726SH) was reported by the Cuban Embassy in the United States as violating Cuban territorial waters and came within one nautical mile of shore in the specified location. Cuban personnel conducted a standard identification approach.

The embassy statement said that the vessel’s crew initiated gunfire. The confrontation resulted in four fatalities and six injuries on the foreign vessel. Cuban forces provided medical aid to the injured.

No public details have been released on the crew’s identities, nationalities, or the vessel’s purpose or prior movements.

Assessment: The sequence shows escalation from identification to exchange of fire after the foreign crew opened fire. The outcome reflects Cuban response within claimed territorial limits, but the absence of independent tracking data limits verification of the vessel’s exact path and speed. This incident highlights the potential for rapid escalation in contested maritime areas when identification procedures are resisted.

Vessel Registration Context

The vessel is a U.S.-registered speedboat under Florida registration number FL7726SH. Public U.S. vessel documentation and commercial maritime databases contain no prior notable incidents or ownership details linked to this registration. Florida-registered small craft frequently operate in regional waters.

Assessment: Limited public registry information is typical for small private vessels. The absence of pre-incident tracking data restricts independent confirmation of the Cuban account of the vessel’s movements. This gap affects full assessment of the violation’s circumstances.

Cuban Position on Sovereignty

Cuban authorities state the vessel was in clear violation and that its crew initiated hostilities. The Ministry of the Interior reaffirms Cuba’s right to protect territorial waters as a core element of state sovereignty and regional stability. In the official statement, Cuba refers to the vessel as a “foreign vessel.”

Assessment: The statement frames the action as defensive enforcement consistent with established policy. Emphasis on ongoing investigations indicates intent to document the sequence, while the sovereignty reaffirmation signals continuity in Cuba’s maritime enforcement posture.
