U.S. Forces Conduct Airstrike Targeting al-Shabaab in Southern Somalia

SOMALIA - In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike targeting al-Shabaab on February 9, in the vicinity of southern Somalia, approximately 32 miles (51 kilometers) northeast of Kismayo.

This operation continues efforts to degrade al-Shabaabโ€™s ability to threaten U.S. forces and citizens abroad. The initial assessment indicates no civilian casualties.

Key Developments

The airstrike targeted al-Shabaab militants in a remote area northeast of Kismayo. U.S. Africa Command reported that the action was taken alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces to counter the groupโ€™s threats.

Specific details regarding units and assets involved remain withheld to maintain operational security.

This operation follows a series of U.S. airstrikes in Somalia during early 2026, with between 23 and 26 strikes in January targeting both al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia affiliates.
