WEST AFRICA - The United States has deployed a small military team to Nigeria to assist in combating the Islamic State threat, following airstrikes conducted in December 2025. This deployment marks the first acknowledged U.S. ground presence in Nigeria since the strikes, aimed at enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation. The team provides unique capabilities to support Nigerian efforts against ISIS affiliates in the region.

U.S. Africa Command conducted airstrikes against ISIS targets in Sokoto State, Nigeria, on December 25, 2025, in coordination with Nigerian authorities. The strikes targeted ISIS camps, resulting in the deaths of multiple militants. General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, commander of U.S. Africa Command, stated that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to disrupt violent extremist organizations.
