Belarusian Balloon Incursions Escalate Hybrid Operations Along Poland-Belarus Border

EASTERN EUROPE - On February 1 Polish air defense systems identified balloon-like objects crossing from Belarus during the night of January 31 to February 1, resulting in temporary airspace closures over the Podlaskie region.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces tracked the objects, which authorities linked to ongoing hybrid operations potentially for smuggling or intelligence purposes.

This event builds on a surge of similar violations, with more than 200 balloons entering Polish and Lithuanian airspace since October 2025, frequently carrying contraband such as cigarettes or equipped with GPS devices to challenge border security.

According to the European Parliament, Belarus employs these tactics to destabilize NATO’s eastern perimeter amid accusations of state-orchestrated migration and sabotage since 2021.

Lithuanian officials documented parallel entries, which disrupted Vilnius Airport operations and underscored coordinated efforts possibly tied to Russian strategic interests. The repeated occurrences, particularly during holidays, elevate risks to civilian aviation and critical infrastructure, prompting enhanced EU monitoring and sanctions.

These activities fit into Belarus’s broader asymmetric approach, including drone and balloon probes that endanger aviation and force airport shutdowns. EU Member States have reported increased hybrid threats, with Poland and Lithuania bearing the brunt through porous borders facilitating migrant flows and aerial intrusions.

According to the Atlantic Council, the strategy aims to erode alliance cohesion, testing response mechanisms in strategically vital areas near NATO bases.
