What Is DEFCON 5 Or Fade Out Warning Level?

DEFCON 5, or Fade Out, is the lowest or normal state of readiness and is sometimes described as a "blue alert" status. It reflects peacetime or lower readiness conditions.

The alert color for DEFCON 5 is blue and is also called "normal readiness". Some mistakenly believe that condition level 5, or Fade Out, is the highest state of readiness and that level 1 is the lowest. In reality, DEFCON 5 is the lowest level and DEFCON 1 is the highest alert condition.

DEFCON 5 may describe routine peacetime posture, while forces remain prepared at a normal state of alert.
