U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan:

"FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico — Installation U.S. Army civilian firefighters taught preschoolers to recognize firefighters as trusted helpers in emergencies Oct. 9 at the U.S. Coast Guard Child Development Center in Río Bayamón Housing, reinforcing fire‑safety awareness and strengthening ties with military families.

During the visit, firefighters introduced children to their protective equipment, gave them an up-close look at a fire truck and brought along Sparky the Fire Dog, the National Fire Protection Association's fire safety mascot.

The interactive activities helped children become comfortable around firefighters and familiar with the equipment they use during emergencies.

"The children loved the surprise of having the firefighters here and getting to meet Sparky," said Jose A. Garcia, the center's training and curriculum specialist.

Beyond introducing children to firefighting equipment, the visit addressed an important safety concern: Young children may become frightened by firefighters wearing protective gear during emergencies.

"Our primary goal was to familiarize children with firefighters, particularly when wearing full protective gear, and reinforce that firefighters are friendly, approachable, and there to help during emergencies," said Fernando J. Velez, Fort Buchanan's assistant fire chief for prevention.

The department coordinated the visit as part of Fire Prevention Month, reinforcing this year's theme, "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower."

The outreach also highlighted cooperation between Fort Buchanan and the Coast Guard community at Río Bayamón Housing, demonstrating how military organizations work together to promote safety and support service members and their families.

Through initiatives like this, the Fort Buchanan Fire Department extends its fire prevention mission beyond the installation, builds trust in first responders and helps prepare the next generation to respond safely during emergencies.

With an annual budget exceeding $500 million, Fort Buchanan supports about 15,000 active-duty personnel, Soldiers of the Army Reserve and Puerto Rico National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve members and Navy Reserve personnel, providing infrastructure and services that enable forces to train, mobilize and deploy worldwide.
