U.S. Forces Strike Iranian Military Targets in Response to Shipping Attacks; Iran Claims Attacks on Nuclear Sites
PERSIAN GULF — U.S. Central Command forces completed an additional round of strikes against Iranian military targets on July 8 to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz. The operation followed earlier strikes on July 7.
U.S. forces struck approximately 90 Iranian military targets, including air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline, according to CENTCOM.
The renewed strikes followed U.S. military engagement on July 7 that hit approximately 80 targets, including more than 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps small boats.
Iran had attacked three commercial vessels in the strait: the Marshall Islands-flagged M/T Al Rekayyat, Saudi Arabia-flagged M/T Wedyan, and Liberian-flagged M/T Cyprus Prosperity, according to CENTCOM.
U.S. Strikes on Iranian Military Targets, Iran Claims U.S. Attacked Nuclear Facilities
CENTCOM stated that the strikes aimed to impose costs on Iran for violating a ceasefire through attacks on commercial shipping.
-
The July 8 strikes targeted assets along the coastline to further limit Iran’s ability to threaten maritime security.
-
The July 7 strikes focused on air defense, command and control, coastal radar, anti-ship missiles, and IRGC small boats. The operational objective centered on degrading Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation.
Iranian Claims Regarding Nuclear Facilities
Iranian officials and state media have claimed that U.S. strikes targeted areas near or involving nuclear sites. Iranian state media outlet Press TV reported that two U.S. projectiles struck Bushehr.
The Islamic Republic News Agency quoted Ehsan Jahanian, Political and Security Deputy Governor of Bushehr Province, stating: “A military outpost in Dashti County was hit by an enemy projectile early this morning. Additionally, another military installation near the town of Choghadak in Bushehr County was struck.”
Iranian state media reported explosions in Bushehr province and other southern coastal areas. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned attacks on Iran’s nuclear installations, stating they constituted a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and would have “everlasting consequences.”
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said the country’s nuclear knowledge “cannot be destroyed by bombing” and that the industry has roots in Iran that “cannot be destroyed.”
These claims concern the July round. IAEA reporting has documented impacts on nuclear sites from earlier military actions this year.
No U.S. official confirmation links the July 7-8 operations to nuclear facilities. No independent satellite confirmation has been published for nuclear-site damage in this round.
Assessment:The Islamic Republic News Agency and Press TV claims describe strikes on military outposts in Bushehr province without independent corroboration of nuclear-site damage during the latest strikes.
CENTCOM descriptions remain limited to conventional coastal targets. If commercial satellite imagery from Planet Labs or Maxar shows no structural change at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant within 48 hours, the claims will remain unattributed to nuclear infrastructure.
Strikes Target Conventional Military and Naval Capabilities; Iranian Claims Emphasize Nuclear-Related Sites
The strikes represent a continuation of U.S. efforts to enforce freedom of navigation in response to Iranian actions against commercial vessels.
Targets centered on conventional military and naval capabilities. Iranian statements emphasize readiness to respond and specifically claim strikes near nuclear sites including Bushehr in the latest round, without matching confirmation from U.S. sources for this operation.
IAEA documentation covers impacts from prior periods. Iranian state media reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards targeted U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait in response. No independent tracking data from commercial AIS has confirmed impacts on those facilities within 72 hours.
