Iran Strikes Kuwait Infrastructure Overnight; Oslo Embassy Blast Suspect Detained; Gulf Air Defenses Intercept 130+ Projectiles

MIDDLE EAST / EUROPE - Overnight Iranian drone strikes hit civilian infrastructure in Kuwait on March 8, targeting a social security headquarters and airport fuel storage. Separately, an explosion damaged the U.S. Embassy consular entrance in Oslo, Norway, where Norwegian media report a 13-year-old was apprehended; police stated they are not connecting the incident to the Iran conflict.

These incidents follow a day of escalation on March 7 in which Israel struck Tehran oil depots for the first time, Iran retaliated against the Bazan oil refinery in Haifa, and Gulf state air defenses intercepted over 130 Iranian projectiles despite Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s pledge to halt strikes on neighboring countries.

The March 8 attacks on Kuwait’s Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS) and Kuwait Aviation Fueling Company (KAFCO) fuel tanks mark an expansion of Iranian targeting from military and diplomatic facilities to civilian infrastructure, following a week in which drones struck U.S. embassies in Riyadh and Dubai and killed six U.S. soldiers at Shuaiba port.

Situation at a Glance

March 8: Kuwait PIFSS and Airport Fuel Tanks Hit

An overnight Iranian drone wave on March 7-8 struck two civilian infrastructure targets in Kuwait. The PIFSS headquarters suffered material damage and fire, prompting the institution to suspend visitor operations. Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) confirmed the attack. PIFSS stated it would continue operating from alternative sites.

At Kuwait International Airport, a drone targeted two KAFCO fuel tanks, sparking a large fire. Kuwait’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed the strike. No injuries were reported at either site.

March 8: Oslo Embassy Explosion (Suspect Detained, Not Iran-Linked)

An explosion damaged the entrance of the U.S. Embassy consular section in Oslo, Norway, at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time on March 8. Norwegian police confirmed the blast caused minor damage and reported no injuries. Police deployed a large security response including helicopters.

Incident Commander Mikael Dellemyr stated it “appears to us that this is an act carried out by someone” and that police “have an idea of the cause.” On any connection to the Iran conflict, Dellemyr said: “We’re not connecting it to the conflict. It’s far too early for that.” Norwegian media (TV2 and Aftenposten, citing unnamed sources) reported that a 13-year-old was apprehended by police, though police declined to confirm the suspect’s age.

The incident follows a pattern in Oslo. In September 2025, a grenade attack occurred approximately 500 meters from the Israeli embassy and the royal palace. Two Yugoslavian M75 military-style hand grenades were planted; one detonated.

Three youths were detained, including two 13-year-olds. Norwegian police characterized it as likely gang-related “violence as a service,” in which criminal organizations pay minors to carry out attacks, exploiting their reduced criminal liability. Norway has experienced increasing spillover of gang violence from neighboring Sweden.

March 7-8: Israel Strikes Tehran Oil Infrastructure (First Time)

Israeli forces struck the Shahr-e Rey oil storage depot in southern Tehran, approximately 15 km south of the city center. Large fires were reported. Iranian state media (IRNA) stated the main refinery facilities were “not damaged” but the storage depot was hit. Israeli media reported approximately 30 oil storage tanks were targeted across Iran in the night’s operations, though it is unclear how many were at this specific facility.

A second strike hit the Shahran fuel and gas storage facility in northwestern Tehran. Sources describe it as one of Tehran’s largest fuel distribution and storage facilities, with 11 storage tanks and a combined capacity over 260 million liters supplying aviation fuel, diesel, and gasoline. The facility was reportedly consumed by fire.

March 7-8: Iran Retaliates Against Bazan Refinery, Haifa

The IRGC launched Kheibarshekan ballistic missiles at the Bazan oil refinery complex in Haifa Bay in direct retaliation for the Israeli strikes on Tehran oil infrastructure. The Bazan Group announced all refinery facilities and subsidiary companies shut down. Significant damage was reported to the on-site power station, pipelines, and transmission lines. The 197,000 barrel-per-day refinery went from partially operational to fully shut down.

Three people were reported killed, according to Anadolu Agency and Israeli media. The Bazan refinery was also struck by IRGC missiles in June 2025, when three workers were killed in that earlier attack. The March 2026 casualty reports should be treated as preliminary pending official Israeli confirmation that these are new casualties distinct from the June 2025 incident, as some sources may conflate the two events.

March 7: IDF Strikes Quds Force Commanders in Beirut

The IDF conducted a precision strike targeting IRGC Quds Force Lebanon Corps commanders at the Ramada Hotel in Beirut’s Raouche district on March 7. Lebanon’s health ministry reported 4 killed and 10 injured.

The IDF confirmed the following day that Reza Khazaei, chief of staff of the Quds Force’s Lebanon Corps who headed IRGC efforts to rebuild Hezbollah’s capabilities, was killed in a separate Israeli Navy strike in Beirut. Some reporting conflates the Ramada Hotel strike with the Khazaei operation; these appear to be two distinct strikes targeting Quds Force personnel in Beirut on the same day.

March 7: Gulf Air Defense Performance

The UAE Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 15 of 16 ballistic missiles and 119 of 121 drones fired from Iran on March 7. Two drones and one missile reached UAE territory; the missile fell into the sea. Fragments from interceptions caused damage in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Qatar’s Ministry of Defence reported intercepting 9 of 10 drones on the same day. One drone struck an uninhabited area. No casualties were reported in either country from the March 7 attacks.

These attacks occurred on the same day as Pezeshkian’s pledge to halt strikes on neighboring countries, effectively contradicting the announcement within hours.
