Temporary Gaza Aid Pier Mission Ended After 20 Million LBS Of Aid Delivered - The pier was projected by the Pentagon in April to cost around $320 million and was reduced by $90 million by the Pentagon in early June to $230 million. Read Full Report.
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has announced that the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore or JLOTS pier will no longer be used for transporting aid to Gaza after it said the temporary pier transported 20 million pounds of aid to the Strip in a “cost-effective manner”. It also added that land-routes are the most effective and efficient way to get aid into Gaza.
The pier was projected by the Pentagon in April to cost around $320 million and was reduced by $90 million by the Pentagon in early June. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said on June 5th that the pier cost approximately $230 million, and included “some” of the costs for repairing and rebuilding it after being damaged by rough seas.
Pentagon: Significant Savings On Temporary Pier In Gaza, Aid To Now Flow to Gaza via Land Route From Israel's Port of Ashdod: According to Singh on June 5th, when the temporary humanitarian aid pier was first announced the cost was estimated to be around $320 million, however lower-than-expected costs for the trucks that were contracted, the drivers, commercial vessels, and contribution from a British berthing vessel for soldiers and sailors, the cost was lowered to approximately $230 million.
Singh’s statement said at the time, “When we first announced this humanitarian maritime corridor, we estimated that the cost was approximately $320 million. However, lower-than-expected costs for contracted trucks, drivers, and commercial vessels, and the United Kingdom's contribution of a vert- — of — of a berthing vessel for our soldiers and sailors have lowered our cost — our latest cost assessment to approximately $230 million.”
She added, “While assessments are ongoing, this assessment — this estimate does include some of the costs associated with the repairs and rebuilding of the pier. And just as a reminder, these are estimates and initial assessments, and the cost could fluctuate depending on the length of the mission and future costs, an example of that being additional repairs.”
"As a reminder, these are estimates and initial assessments," Singh said, "and the cost could fluctuate depending on the length of the mission and future cost — an example of that being additional repairs."
She also said on June 5th, "I think it's important to remember that, for a little over a week, JLOTS was operating quite efficiently, [and] we were able to get … over 1,000 metric tons [of aid] into Gaza”.
"And it was successful in that regard, [so] we're going to work to continue to get humanitarian aid into the Palestinian people who need it most." Pentagon: JLOTS Mission Has Ended, Aid Will Flow To Gaza Via Israel’s Northern Border Crossing: Read More.

U.S. Central Command: RED SEA – Sailors assigned to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKECSG) airlifted the crew of a merchant vessel attacked by Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea, June 15.
The Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk cargo carrier M/V Tutor was struck by an Iranian-back Houthi uncrewed surface vessel (USV) while sailing in the international waters of the Southern Red Sea, June 12.
The attack caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room. One civilian mariner remains missing.
A helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74 airlifted 24 civilian mariners from Tutor to Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58). From there, helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7 transported the group to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). After being medically checked on IKE, the mariners were flown ashore for follow-on care.
It’s humbling to watch the Strike Group provide assistance and rescue the crew of M/V Tutor,” said Rear Adm. Marc Miguez, commander, IKECSG, Carrier Strike Group 2. “We are always prepared to help; it is the right thing to do."
“Despite these senseless attacks on innocent mariners just doing their job, the Philippine Sea crew stand ready to help preserve safety of life at sea, always,” said Capt. Steven Liberty, Philippine Sea’s commanding officer.
On June 13, HSM-74 aircraft from Philippine Sea medically evacuated a severely injured civilian mariner from M/V Verbena to a nearby partner force ship for medical attention.
Palau-flagged, Ukrainian-owned Verbena was sailing in the Gulf of Aden when it was struck by two anti-ship cruise missiles fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen.

RUSSIA/CUBA - Russian vessels have docked in Havana, Cuba for a planned visit, while Russian nuclear forces carry out joint exercises with Belarus to send “a message to Washington”.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said the purpose of the joint nuclear drills with Belarus was to maintain the readiness of the armed forces of Belarus and Russia, as well as to ensure its territorial integrity.
The Ministry of Defense stated, “During the exercise, issues of joint training of units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons will be worked out”.
Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported that the purpose of the visit to Havana, Cuba, and the nuclear drills was to send a message to Washington. It said, “The fact is that tactical nuclear weapons, unlike strategic ones, have not been the subject of international agreements in which Russia participates, so the number of such ammunition in arsenals is not known for certain”.
It also claimed that the Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, which can carry both a conventional or a nuclear warhead are invulnerable to air defense systems and have been used “more than once” to strike Ukrainian military targets. Read more.

US: Innocents Were Killed In Israeli Rescue Operation In Gaza - Sullivan: Innocent people were tragically killed in this operation. The exact number we don’t know, but innocent people were killed.
WASHINGTON - White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan said that "innocent people were killed" after claims by the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry said 274 Palestinians were killed during the rescue and another 700 were wounded.
Additionally, the Hamas military wing al-Qassam Brigades [intel on the military wing is attached to this article] claimed that 3 hostages were killed during the operation, one of which it said was an American citizen. The claims by the al-Qassam Brigades have not been verified.
Gazan Death Toll Reported So Far And The Unreliable Nature Of Battlefield Casualty Counts
Although a total of 37,000 Palestinians are reported to have been killed during the Israeli military operations within the Gaza Strip, the numbers being reported by the United Nations, and the media are unverified numbers given by the Hamas-led Gazan Health Ministry which do not differentiate between civilian and combatant deaths.
The numbers given by the Hamas-led Gazan Health Ministry have shifted dramatically since the conflict in Gaza began, especially concerning the estimated deaths of women and children, which at one point accounted for above 60% of the reported deaths, but in April shifted to 40% of the total deaths.
The change went unnoticed by the United Nations and the mainstream media for months, and the Gazan Health Ministry has made no effort to justify the shift.
Additionally, during wartime situations when civilian deaths, sadly, have propaganda value for each side, casualty numbers are often inflated or exaggerated. Furthermore, they can be difficult to track due to the tumultuous situation created by an ongoing regional conflict. Sullivan: We Cannot Make A Definitive Statement On Claims Of Civilian Deaths, Intel On The al-Qassam Brigades: Read more.

Pentagon: Repairs On Gaza Pier Ongoing After Being Damaged By Rough Seas - Pier repairs are ongoing in the coastal city of Ashdod, U.S. Central Command could transport the pier back to Gaza and reattach it to the shoreline as early as next week.
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon says repairs on the Gazan pier are ongoing after it was damaged by rough seas, adding that the previously estimated cost of the overall cost for the U.S. Central Command's Joint Logistics, Over-the-Shore capability has been reduced by around $90 million, a nearly 1/3 reduction due to lower costs for contracted trucks, drivers, and commercial vessels.
During a press briefing, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh told reporters that the costs were also reduced as a berthing vessel for soldiers and sailors was contributed by the United Kingdom.
The total estimated cost for the Gazan pier now stands at $230 million as opposed to the $320 million originally estimated, which Singh stated includes the costs for repairing the pier after recently being damaged, which caused the pier to become detached from the Gazan shoreline.
“These are estimates and initial assessments," Singh said, adding, "and the cost could fluctuate depending on the length of the mission and future cost — an example of that being additional repairs”.
Repairs On The Pier Ongoing, No Changes To Be Made To Strengthen Pier, May Be Taken Offline During Bad Weather
Singh said that pier repairs are ongoing in the coastal city of Ashdod, and added that U.S. Central Command could transport the pier back to Gaza and reattach it to the shoreline as early as next week.
The Department of Defense does not anticipate any more delays in distributing the aid once the pier is once again operational, she said during the briefing.
"As soon as the temporary pier is re-anchored to the beach in Gaza, we expect aid to flow pretty immediately.”
Singh was then asked if the U.S. Central Command is making any modifications to the pier to make sure it is not damaged again by rough seas, to which she said there will be no changes to how the pier will continue to operate, adding that leadership may, at their discretion, take the pier offline temporarily during bad weather.
"I think it's important to remember that, for a little over a week, JLOTS was operating quite efficiently, [and] we were able to get … over 1,000 metric tons [of aid] into Gaza," she said.
"And it was successful in that regard, [so] we're going to work to continue to get humanitarian aid into the Palestinian people who need it most."
Rough Seas Caused Vessels Associated With Pier To Run Aground, Detached Pier From Shore: According to the Pentagon, rough seas late last month caused three of four vessels associated with the humanitarian aid pier to break free from their anchors and become beached ashore. Read more.

Pentagon: Over 1 Million Pounds of Humanitarian Aid Transported Into Gaza Via Temporary Pier - U.S. forces have facilitated the transfer of more than 1 million pounds of humanitarian assistance into Gaza via the Defense Department's Joint Logistics, Over-the-Shore pier.
U.S. Central Command: U.S. Central Command personnel continue to team up with USAID and the U.N. to deliver aid to the people of Gaza via a temporary pier affixed to the beach.
Aid delivered by CENTCOM personnel from the sea to the beach transfer point: 820.5 metric tons total as of May 22, 150 metric tons on May 22 Aid distributed from the beach transfer point to the U.N. warehouse:, 506 metric tons total as of May 22, 185 metric tons on May 22.
Pentagon: More Than 1 Million Pounds of Aid Moved Into Gaza Via Temporary Pier: PENTAGON: U.S. forces have facilitated the transfer of more than 1 million pounds of humanitarian assistance into Gaza via the Defense Department's Joint Logistics, Over-the-Shore pier, a senior military official said today.
Navy Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, said 820 metric tons, or 1.2 million pounds, of aid have been transferred to a beach transfer point on Gaza's shore since the temporary pier became operational on May 17.
Of that, 506 metric tons, or two-thirds of total aid transferred via the maritime corridor to the beach transfer point, has been distributed by the United Nations further into Gaza, Cooper said, citing figures current as of last night.
The effort, led by the U.S. Agency for International Development, is being carried out as part of the United States' broader efforts alongside international partners to surge assistance to Palestinians in need.
"U.S. Central Command forces continue to support USAID's provision of humanitarian assistance into Gaza from the sea as part of our government policy to flood the zone with humanitarian assistance," Cooper said.
Construction of the pier began late last month after President Joe Biden called on the military to conduct the emergency operation during his State of the Union address.
Soldiers from the Army's 7th Transportation Brigade at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and sailors from Naval Beach Group 1 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California, were tapped to deploy the JLOTS capability.
Delivering the capability involved a complex choreography of logistics support and landing crafts that carry the equipment used to construct the approximately 1,800-foot causeway comprising modular, floating sections linked together.
The units also constructed a roll-on, roll-off discharge facility that is 72 feet wide by 270 feet long. The discharge facility will remain about far off Gaza's shore and enable cargo ships to offload aid shipments at sea prior to being transported to shore.
About 1,000 soldiers and sailors are involved in the operation.
The U.S. is also working closely with Cyprus, the government of Israel, the U.N. and international donors including the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and European Union as part of the multi-step process to move aid into Gaza from the sea.
International donors first ship aid into Cyprus where it is screened and packaged before being loaded onto ships to be transported to the temporary pier.
From the pier, the aid is offloaded into a marshaling area before being distributed further into Gaza by humanitarian organizations.
Officials emphasized that no U.S. boots are on the ground in Gaza as part of the operation, and that safety of U.S. forces is the top priority. The distribution of aid into Gaza once offloaded from the pier is being done solely by humanitarian aid workers.
"This is a complex humanitarian aid mission that requires continuous coordination between many partners," said Dan Dieckhaus, the director of USAID's response operations.
"The support and contributions of the U.N., the government of Cyprus and other international partners, including the U.K., European Union, United Arab Emirates, France, Romania and others is vital, as is the cooperation of Israel."
In addition to operating the pier, the U.S. has stood up a coordination cell to ensure operations are carried out as safely and efficiently as possible.
"Our commitment to the safety of humanitarian workers requires a meticulous approach to distribution, route planning and convoy monitoring with various stakeholders, especially the U.N., to reduce risk," Cooper said.
"We're doing this collaboratively with the Israeli Defense Forces and the United Nations who are embedded in our combined coordination cell."
Cooper emphasized that despite measures to mitigate risk, the environment remains "very complex and dynamic."
Still, he said the U.S. aims to continue increasing the flow of aid. "We have thousands of tons of aid in the pipeline," he said, adding "we do encourage international donors to continue their contributions so that we can sustain and increase the volume of lifesaving aid getting to the people of Gaza every day."

Iranian Lawmaker Says He Believes Iran Already Has Nuclear Weapons But Does Not Announce It - The IAEA announced earlier this year that Iran had obtained enough enriched uranium to make "several" nuclear bombs if Iran chose to build them. Read Full Report | Read All Reports.
TEHRAN - After Iran said it would change its nuclear doctrine if Israel attacked its nuclear facilities, an Iranian lawmaker told an Iranian news agency that the country has already obtained nuclear weapons, "but do not announce it".
This, after the IAEA had announced that Iran had obtained enough enriched uranium to make "several" nuclear bombs if Iran chose to build them.
At the end of April, Israel had carried out a limited strike on one of Iran's nuclear facilities in response to an Iranian missile and drone attack on Israel, which confirmed that Iran's ballistic missiles were capable of hitting Israeli territory.
The Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facility was "very limited" according to a U.S. official at the time, and targeted an air defense radar site protecting the Natanz nuclear facility in Central Iran.
Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani Iranian news outlet Rouydad 24 on Friday, "In my opinion, we have achieved nuclear weapons, but we do not announce it. It means our policy is to possess nuclear bombs, but our declared policy is currently within the framework of the JCPOA.
The reason is that when countries want to confront others, their capabilities must be compatible, and Iran's compatibility with America and Israel means that Iran must have nuclear weapons."
Ardestani added, “In a climate where Russia has attacked Ukraine and Israel has attacked Gaza, and Iran is a staunch supporter of the Resistance Front, it is natural for the containment system to require that Iran possess nuclear bombs. However, whether Iran declares it is another matter". Iran Had Warned If Israel Dared To Strike Its Nuclear Facilities It Could Change Its Nuclear Doctrine. ISRAEL/GAZA - The United States has finished construction of the two floating piers that will be used to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Construction of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore, or JLOTS, system on the Mediterranean Sea was completed on Tuesday, according to the Pentagon.
After Weather Delays, Construction Of The 2 Floating Piers Completed: On May 7th, the Pentagon announced during a briefing that the Construction of the Trident Pier section of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore, or JLOTS, system had been completed, adding that although completed, it had not been deployed due to the weather conditions and sea swells in the region.
The Joint Logistics Over-The-Shore capability, or JLOTS, are being established in support of humanitarian assistance efforts with USAID and other partners.
The Pentagon said on May 7th, "Right now, the two piers are floating on the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Israel near the Port of Ashdod — about 18 miles north of Gaza. Weather conditions, Singh said, prevent moving either of them to their final location".
Sabrina Singh said during the briefing, "The U.S. military has completed the offshore construction of the Trident pier section, or 'the causeway,' which is the component that will eventually be anchored to the Gaza shore".
"As I mentioned last week, construction of the floating pier section has also been completed. So as of today, the construction of the two portions of the JLOTS — the floating pier and the Trident pier — are complete and awaiting final movement offshore," she added.
"Late last week, Centcom temporarily paused moving the floating pier and Trident pier toward the vicinity of Gaza due to sea state considerations," she said, adding, "Today there are still forecasted high winds and high sea swells, which are causing unsafe conditions for the JLOTS components to be moved."
She added during that time that the cargo vessel MV Sagamore was at a Cyprus port being loaded up with humanitarian aid supplies that would be bound for Gaza after it was finished being loaded.
"The Sagamore is a cargo vessel that will use the JLOTS system and will make trips between Cyprus and the offshore floating pier as USAID and other partners collect aid from around the world," she said at the time.
She said that the Sagamore, which is a commercial ship registered in the U.S. would be loaded with humanitarian aid in Cyprus, and then travel from there to a temporary floating pier a few miles off of Gaza's coast where it would be unloaded onto trucks aboard Army-owned landing craft utility ships (LCUs) and logistic support vessels (LSVs).
After that was finished, she said that Army vessels would then travel toward Gaza and meet up with the Trident pier where trucks onboard the landing craft utility ships and logistic support vessels would drive onto the pier, and onto Gaza's shore where the supplies could then be staged for delivery within Gaza.
On May 9th, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder reiterated what was said during the May 7th briefing that, "One floating pier will be deployed several miles offshore outside Gaza, while the other, called the Trident pier, or "causeway," will be pushed onto and attached to the Gazan shore. Together they will be used to move humanitarian aid into Gaza".
The statement added, "Both of the floating piers, along with the MV Roy P. Benavidez — a large, medium-speed, roll-on, roll-off ship — are off the coast of Israel near the Port of Ashdod, about 18 miles north of Gaza. Unfavorable sea conditions prevent movement of the piers to their final location".
"In the meantime, the MV Sagamore — a commercial cargo ship — has been loaded with humanitarian aid in Cyprus and has made its way to Ashdod.
Instead of waiting for the piers to be deployed, humanitarian aid on the Sagamore will be moved to the Benavidez so that the Sagamore can go back to Cyprus to get more aid supplies."
He then said, "In this period of time that we have before the pier becomes operational, we're essentially using that time to get ahead".
"Since the Sagamore has been loaded with humanitarian assistance, by transloading that on to the Benavidez, the Benavidez is essentially in position to immediately start loading that onto the floating pier for subsequent shipment to the causeway and delivery to the shore."
The Benavidez will remain near the Gaza Strip after the humanitarian mission begins so that the Sagamore can make additional trips to Cyprus to pick up more aid to be transported to Gaza.
After the two floating piers are deployed near Gaza, "ships loaded with humanitarian aid will dock at the floating pier off the coast of Gaza and have their cargo unloaded onto trucks that are onboard Army-owned landing craft utility ships, or LCUs, and logistic support vessels, or LSVs".
After that, the Army vessels will navigate toward the Gaza Strip and meet up with the Trident Pier where trucks aboard the LCUs and LSVs will drive onto the pier, onto the Gaza shore and stage deliveries of humanitarian aid inside Gaza.
Ryder added that "Non-U.S. civilian contractors will be responsible for driving those vehicles".
"While I'm not going to provide a specific date, we expect these temporary piers to be put into position in the very near future, pending suitable security and weather conditions," he said during the May 9th briefing."
"In the meantime, the motor vessel Sagamore departed Cyprus today loaded with humanitarian aid for transloading onto the motor vessel Roy P. Benavidez, which is currently off the coast of Ashdod, to begin the process of staging humanitarian aid," he added.
"Once the floating pier and the Trident pier are in position, this will allow for the Benavidez to transload — load the aid to logistics support vessels and delivery while the motor vessel Sagamore is back in Cyprus to enable loading of additional aid."
"The United States is joining an international community-backed effort led by USAID, with support from the United Nations, the World Food Program, the Republic of Cyprus, other partner nations, and the IDF to expand the delivery of humanitarian assistance via a maritime corridor to the people of Gaza." SOHR: Israel Shot Down Iranian Drone In Syria, Israel Carries Out "Dialed Back" Offensive On Rafah - Israeli media reported that the military carried out a “larger but dialed back” operation in eastern Rafah so as not to jeopardize future hostage deal talks with the Hamas.
SYRIA - The UK-based Syrian Observatory For Human Rights (SOHR) reported on May 8th that Israeli anti-aircraft systems shot down an Iranian drone “near Nawa City western of Daraa” and said that it’s believed to have been launched from outside of Syria and on its way toward the Golan Heights in Northern Israel.
It also reported: “Since the beginning of 2024, SOHR has documented 37 Israeli attacks on the Syrian territory: 25 airstrikes and 12 rocket attacks by ground forces. Those attacks destroyed nearly 74 targets, including weapons and ammunitions warehouses, headquarters, centres and vehicles. The Israeli attacks left 130 combatants dead and 53 others injured”.
The United States has stopped a shipment of weapons to Jerusalem as the Israeli military carries out a major, but “dialed back” offensive on the Hamas terrorist organization within Rafah in Southern Gaza.
According to a senior Biden administration official, the decision to stop weapon shipments follows talks with Israel on how it will “operate differently against Hamas there than they have elsewhere in Gaza”.
U.S. officials have said that the Administration will not support a ground offensive within Rafah, where around 1.3 million Gazan civilians fled to after evacuating northern and central parts of the Gaza Strip in response to the ongoing war by Israel on the Hamas, a terrorist group that infiltrated Israel on October 7th of last year and took civilian hostages back with them into the Gaza Strip.
Israeli media reported that the military carried out a “larger but dialed back” operation in eastern Rafah so as not to jeopardize future hostage deal talks with the Hamas terrorist organization and to give more time for negotiations with the group on releasing the remaining hostages.

NIGER - Although Russian troops have moved into an air base also housing U.S. forces, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin said during a briefing that the Russian soldiers are located in a compound separate from U.S. forces and have no access to U.S. military equipment.
Air Base 101 in Niger is a Nigerian Air Force base, co-located with an international airport in the country’s capital of Niamey. Russian troops are not mingling with U.S. forces even though the Russian forces are located in a wing of the base close to where U.S. troops are stationed.
During a press conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, Austin said, “Air Base 101, where our forces [are], is a Nigerian Air Force base that is co-located with an international airport in the capital city. The Russians are in a separate compound and don't have access to U.S. forces or access to our equipment.”
Austin added, “And this is something that, you know, again, I'm always focused on the safety and the protection of our troops, something that we'll continue to watch. But right now, I don't see a significant issue here in terms of our force protection”.
