DEFCON 2 On January 15th, 1991: Gulf War - Battleships Deployed
Defcon 2 was reached on January 15th, 1991 in the initialization phase of the Gulf war during the beginning phase of Operation Desert Storm.
The purpose of going to defcon 2 and carrying out Operation Desert Storm was to flush out Iraqi soldiers in Kuwait after Iraq invaded and occupied the territory, attempting to claim it as their own by force.
The Gulf War in 1991 was the last time in recent history that US Battleships were deployed into battle.
