U.S. Combatant Commands
Official U.S. Combatant Commands plus Defcon Level monitoring commands with current alert levels.
The Department of Defense maintains 11 U.S. Combatant Commands - 6 geographic (regional) and 5 functional (specialized). Defcon Level also tracks additional monitoring commands for bio, disaster, and financial risk. Each command has its own area of responsibility and current alert status.
What Are Combatant Commands?
Combatant Commands (COCOMs) are joint military organizations responsible for operations in specific geographic regions or functional areas. They report directly to the Secretary of Defense and the President. Each command is led by a four-star general or admiral and has forces assigned from multiple military branches.
Geographic vs. Functional Commands
Geographic Commands
Responsible for all U.S. military operations within their assigned region. There are 6 geographic commands, each covering a specific area of the globe (e.g., CENTCOM for the Middle East, INDOPACOM for Asia-Pacific). These commands coordinate all military branches operating in their region.
Functional Commands
Responsible for specific military functions worldwide regardless of geographic boundaries. There are 5 functional commands covering areas like cyberspace operations (CYBERCOM), nuclear deterrence (STRATCOM), special operations (SOCOM), space domain (SPACECOM), and global mobility (TRANSCOM).
Each command can be at a different DEFCON level based on threats in their area of responsibility or functional domain.
