What is the Doomsday Clock and how does it work? The Clock is simply a symbol used to indicate how close we are to.. well doomsday, or the end of the world due to all sorts of man made global catastrophe.
The Doomsday Clock was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947, then known as the Chicago Atomic Scientists which later changed to Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists magazine.
The warning system was created during the inception of nuclear weapons, and their usage on Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the world began to realize the man made dangers that awaited the world but later began to be associated with the perceived threat of global warming and even the threat of artificial intelligence.
The Doomsday Clock works by using the minute hand to convey how close we are to 'midnight' or Doomsday. The closer the minute hand is to midnight, the closer doomsday is supposedly upon us. Factors regarding doomsday clock hand changes are, but not limited to:
- Risk Of Nuclear War
- Artificial Intelligence
- Global Warming
- Man Made Catastrophes
Who decides whether the minute hand on the Doomsday clock is put closer to midnight, or further back? The Bulletin Of Atomic Scientists still decide where the doomsday clock minute hand goes.
