In 1988 the doomsday clock is set back by three minutes to midnight to 6 minutes to midnight. The United States and Russia signs the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 1987 which became effective in 1988, banning certain types of nuclear arms for the first time.
The United States nuclear stockpile continues to drop, from 21,392 to 10,904 by 1990, and for the first time Russia's stockpile begins to drop as well, from 39,197 to 37,000 nuclear weapons.
